The Centre for Global Indigenous Futures will explore the complexity of Indigenous life and identity in order to imagine futures in which Indigenous people are not only present but are thriving. We consider Indigenous love, joy, intimacy, sexuality, identity, care, relationality, representation and digital life and how these might emerge and evolve. Through challenging colonial research paradigms which understand Indigenous people as entrenched in the past, the research conducted through The Centre for Global Indigenous Futures aims to open up possibilities and opportunities for Indigenous futures.

Background

The Centre for Global Indigenous Futures, based in the Department of Critical Indigenous Studies, is located in the Faculty of Arts at Macquarie University on the lands of the Wallumattagal people of the Dharug Nation. It has grown from the success of the Forum for Indigenous Research Excellence (FIRE) which was established in 2015 by Distinguished Professor Bronwyn Carlson. FIRE brought together Indigenous researchers, Graduate Research Students and their allies from across the continent now known as Australia, Aotearoa (New Zealand), United States, and Canada to provide a site for collaboration in research, teaching, and community building. In 2021 FIRE has re-established itself as the Centre for Global Indigenous Futures as it moves toward a more globally connected and focused research agenda.

Objectives

The Centre for Global Indigenous Futures will produce, promote and advance Indigenous research(ers). It will draw on a global network of academics and experts and provide a range of resources to facilitate the growth of a new crop of Indigenous researchers who will lead future-focused research into expanding areas of inquiry.

We will:

  • Explore how Indigenous peoples and communities are imagining their futures

  • Centre Indigenous peoples, knowledges and practices

  • Challenge dominant research paradigms

  • Build world-leading collaborative research capacity that is Indigenous-led and sustainable

  • Ensure a continuity of research training, development and investment in Indigenous peoples and communities.
